"Controversial plans for lighted ballfields at Magnuson Park in Sand Point were taken down a few notches last week at a Seattle City Council meeting. Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and Seattle Parks and Recreation have proposed building 15 fields, with 11 of them lighted. But the council’s parks committee ended up recommending that only 11 be build, with just seven of them having lights."

Title: "Goodbye sunsets, hello glares"

"Is a waterfront park the right place for a late night sports complex? Since it will draw teams from throughout the region, wouldn’t a site closer to the freeway make more sense? Flood lights on 80 foot poles will be a bright and irritating blight on the natural beauty of Lake Washington. Many say we need more sports fields – let’s either find a better location, or build this complex without the lights. A peninsula jutting into Lake Washington is the wrong place for hundreds of glaring flood lights."

The proposed Magnuson Park lighted playing fields were the main point of conversation at the July 21, 2003 Moss Bay Neighborhood Association meeting held at the Kirkland Library conference room. Packed audience listens to presenters from Friends of Magnuson Park organization who describe the effects the project will have on the environment (wetlands, birds, etc.) as well as Kirkland quality of life. (Note: Moss Bay is one of approximately a dozen neighborhoods in Kirkland and stretches between Central Way in the north, and NE 68th Street in the south.)

Title: "The Lights Across the Lake, Concerns raised over new sports fields in Seattle's Magnuson Park"

Reporter: Bill Putnam

Several Kirkland residents express their concerns about the effect on Kirkland of 600 1000-watt lights planned for Magnuson park soccer and baseball fields. Moss Bay Neighborhood Association writes a letter detailing concerns to Kirkland City Council. Eric Friedli, Seattle Park Department’s Director of Magnuson Park claims that the use of modern lighting technology means there is no need for worry. Friedli admits soccer fields will "be lit until 11pm or so."
