Seven lighted ballfields -- not 11 -- should be built directly across from Kirkland as part of a $60 million make-over for the park, a committee of the Seattle City Council decided Wednesday. "Seattle's plan to put 11 lighted ball fields in the 352-acre park 'will be akin to six regional shopping malls stacked on top of each other, making it one of the largest sources of light pollution in the entire region,'' Portland, Ore. lighting expert James Benya told a packed public forum earlier this month... People can choose to live with the lights in exchange for having an exercise and sports opportunity, he said, 'but don't pretend it's not going to have an impact.'"

"Among the speakers will be a wildlife biologist, an expert on light pollution and Kirkland City Council member Dave Asher.
