Magnuson Park Sports Field Complex
Project Map and Description

The map below shows the 153 acre sports field complex and wetlands project proposed by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation for Magnuson Park. [The map was taken from page 1-11 of the December 2003 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Addendum, accessible via Park Department's Magnuson Park EIS page.]

Meaning of Colored Lines and shading

Black dashed line. The total project area is 153.3 acres. This area is outlined with the black dashed line.

Red solid line. The proposed sportsfield complex will occupy 72 acres. We've outlined this area in red. It includes the actual ballfields, their immediate landscaping, spectator areas, the service roads and paths that serve them, and parking lots. Most of the perimeter is defined by paved roads or walkways that may be paved or overlain with some other hardened surface such as compacted gravel.

Amber shading. The ballfield area will total 37 acres. This area is shaded in amber. The 11 sports fields along the left will be carpeted with artificial turf and have 628 high intensity lights mounted on 78 poles as high as 85 feet. The "sports meadow" at top center will be natural grass turf and will not have lighting; it will accommodate 4 fields.

Green solid line. The drainage facility serving the complex will occupy 10.7 acres. We've outlined this area in green. The impervious surfaces associated with the sports complex will generate high volumes of runoff which cannot be drained into Lake Washington without some "pre-treatment." The area labelled "marsh ponds" on the plan, will be developed not for habitat so much as to hold runoff and trap or filter contaminants before it flows to further wetlands and into Lake Washington.

The remaining portion of the project area will be 70.5 acres. This area lies within the black dashed line, but is not outlined in red or green. This area includes major park roadways and some additional parking, a children's play area, picnic area, and what is shown on the plan as the "central habitat reserve area." Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50% to 75% of this area may be characterized as open space or habitat.

How the Sportsfield Project Fits Into the Rest of the Park

Magnuson Park totals about 350 acres. The map below covers the entire park; the footprint of the sportsfield construction project is outlined in red.

You'll notice that much of the 196.7 acres outside the project area—especially the western (left) edge—is occupied by roads, pavement, and buildings left from the old Sand Point Naval Station. These building house a variety of cultural events and some indoor sports including hockey and soccer.

There is some green-space adjacent to the northeast and southeast corners of the project site. There are also lawns along the waterfront and around the buildings along Sand Point Way NE (west / left edge of the park). About 9 acres of the park just south of the NOAA campus is dedicated to an off-leash dog area, largely denuded of vegetation and partially covered with wood chips. A community garden lies just north of the play area at upper left of the project site.
